How much back support does electric wheelchair need?
The amount of back support an electric wheelchair needs is highly individual and depends on the user's specific physical condition, needs, and lifestyle. There is no single answer, as what works for one person could be completely inadequate or even harmful for another.A qualified therapist or seating specialist is the best person to conduct a thorough seating assessment and determine the appropriate back support. They will consider factors such as:
1. User's Physical Condition and Needs:
Trunk and Upper Body Strength: A user with good trunk control and upper body strength will require less support than someone who cannot sit upright on their own. Active users who self-propel (even in a power chair with their arms) may need a lower backrest to allow for free arm and shoulder movement.
Postural Deformities: The backrest needs to accommodate and/or correct any postural asymmetries.
Spinal Support: A good backrest should support the natural curves of the spine and pelvis, promoting an upright posture. This can improve breathing, digestion, and overall function.
Risk of Skin Breakdown: The backrest should distribute pressure evenly, especially over bony areas of the spine, to prevent pressure sores.
2. Type of Wheelchair and Its Features:
Standard (Sling) Backs: These are often found on basic wheelchairs and offer very little support. They can stretch over time and may encourage a "slumped" posture. They are generally not recommended for long-term use in an electric wheelchair.
Rigid (Solid) Backs: These are a significant upgrade from sling backs. They provide firm, stable support for the pelvis and trunk and can often be adjusted for angle. They are available in various heights and widths.
Tension-Adjustable Backs: These have adjustable straps that can be tightened or loosened to conform to the user's posture, offering more support than a standard sling back.
Custom-Molded Backrests: These are the most supportive and are designed to perfectly fit a user with complex postural needs who may not be able to independently shift their position.
Tilt-in-Space and Recline Functions: If the wheelchair has tilt or recline features, a taller backrest is necessary to ensure the user's entire back and head are fully supported as the chair changes position.
3. Lifestyle and Activities:
Mobility and Propulsion: A lower backrest can be beneficial for an active user who needs a full range of arm motion for pushing themselves or for reaching and performing daily tasks.
Transportation: If the user will be transported in a vehicle while in the wheelchair, a higher backrest might be required to accommodate a chest harness or other safety restraints.
Daily Use: The backrest must be comfortable enough for the user to spend several hours in the chair without discomfort or fatigue.
In summary, the "right" amount of back support is a personalized prescription. It is a critical component of a wheelchair's seating system, which works in harmony with the seat cushion. The best practice is to consult with a seating and mobility specialist who can conduct a professional evaluation and recommend a system that meets the user's unique clinical, functional, and lifestyle requirements.
Does electric wheelchair need to be foldable?
Foldable Electric Wheelchairs
Pros:
Portability: This is the biggest advantage. They are designed to be compact and lightweight, making them easy to transport in a car, on public transport, or on a plane.
Storage: They take up less space when not in use, which is ideal for people living in smaller homes or apartments.
Maneuverability: They are often smaller and have a tighter turning radius, making them easier to navigate in tight indoor spaces like crowded stores, restaurants, or narrow hallways.
In summary, a foldable electric wheelchair is an excellent choice for someone who travels frequently, has limited storage space, or uses the chair for shorter
How to determine the battery level and charging status of YS series electric wheelchairs?
Electric wheelchair charging instructions
1. During charging: The adapter indicator light is displayed in yellow. When the power is turned on, the battery level display lights on the controller will light up one by one in a cyclic manner
2. When fully charged: The adapter indicator light turns green, and all 5 battery indicators on the controller light up (one red, two yellow, two green)
3. During the use of the electric wheelchair, the battery level decreases, and the controller indicator light turns off from the green light in sequence. If both green lights turn off, it indicates that the battery level is insufficient. Do not drive long distances. If there is only one red light left, it means that the battery level is almost exhausted. Please be sure to charge it in a timely manner
