The number of batteries in an electric wheelchair depends on its design. A visible battery case may contain multiple cells or batteries, so counting external cases does not establish the system voltage, capacity or replacement requirements. Use the model manual and battery label.
Read voltage and capacity together
Voltage (V) describes the electrical system rating; amp-hours (Ah) describe battery capacity under specified conditions. Neither number tells you how many removable cases the chair has. As a general electrical example, two matched 12V batteries connected in series can form a 24V system; that does not establish the internal arrangement of any particular Anywell model.
Current YS16 configurations
| Model | Listed battery | Rated range |
|---|---|---|
| YS16-1 MAX 12Ah | 24V 12Ah lead-acid | Up to 15 miles under suitable conditions |
| YS16-1 MAX 20Ah | 24V 20Ah lead-acid | Up to 20 miles under suitable conditions |
Compare the 12Ah product and 20Ah product for the current configurations. Ask support for the exact replacement assembly, connector and charger requirements. Do not infer that the batteries can be interchanged between configurations.
Replacement and upgrades
Use only batteries and chargers approved for the exact model. Matching nominal voltage alone is insufficient: chemistry, controller and charger compatibility, connectors, physical mounting and protective systems matter. Do not bypass a battery, rewire the pack, add an extra pack or change chemistry based on a general online guide.
If a system uses matched batteries, have the supplier or a qualified service technician specify the correct replacement procedure. This article does not provide universal voltage-deviation thresholds or a do-it-yourself conversion procedure.
Care depends on the battery
Follow the specified charging interval, temperature limits and storage schedule. Do not deliberately deep-discharge a battery for generic “calibration” or apply lithium storage advice to lead-acid batteries. If there is damage, leaking, unusual heat, swelling or abnormal behavior, stop using or charging the equipment and contact qualified support.
Before buying
Choose a configuration around your route, return-trip reserve, fit and loading needs. Compare the heavy-duty options and contact service and parts for battery-specific documentation. For flights, confirm the actual battery and handling arrangements with the carrier.
