How to Maintain Your Electric Wheelchair in Winter: Essential Tips for Cold Weather Care

Cold, moisture and slippery routes can affect electric-wheelchair operation. Use the operating, charging and storage instructions for your exact chair, battery and charger. A general winter article cannot establish a safe temperature range for every model.

Battery charging and storage

Identify the battery chemistry before following care advice. Follow the manufacturer's charge schedule, temperature limits and storage instructions; do not apply a universal 50-80% storage rule or attach an unapproved battery maintainer. Use the compatible charger and do not charge a damaged, wet, leaking, unusually hot or swollen battery. Stop use and contact the supplier when damage or abnormal behavior is present.

Cold conditions may reduce usable range. Plan a conservative route and return-trip reserve instead of relying on the maximum rated distance. Arrange suitable indoor storage within the documented conditions.

Choose a clear, suitable route

Avoid ice, snow, slush, standing water and slippery slopes. A tire change or waterproof cover does not establish that a chair is suitable for winter terrain. Do not fit unapproved tires or cover motors, ventilation or controls in a way that interferes with operation.

Inspect without improvising repairs

Check for visible tire damage, loose or damaged components and exposed wiring using the manual's inspection checklist. For pneumatic tires, follow the specified pressure; solid tires do not require inflation. Do not open electrical components, alter wiring or lubricate brakes. Use only the specified maintenance products and procedures, and contact support for uncertain repairs.

Clean and dry according to the manual

Remove dirt or salt using the approved cleaning method. Avoid spraying water into controls, motors, connectors or the battery area. If the chair becomes wet, follow the supplier's instructions before operating or charging it again.

Prepare a backup plan

Check the forecast, accessible indoor destinations and transportation arrangements before leaving. If the route or weather falls outside the chair's limits, choose another travel arrangement. Keep contact information available for assistance.

For model-specific questions, contact Anywell service and parts. The written warranty explains coverage and exclusions; this guide does not add weather-damage coverage or replace the operating manual.
