5 Essential Tips for Flying with a Lightweight Folding Electric Wheelchair

Traveling opens up the world, and having limited mobility shouldn't stop you from exploring it. Thanks to modern lightweight folding electric wheelchairs, getting on an airplane with your mobility aid is easier than ever before.

However, airports can be stressful if you aren't prepared. At Anywell Shop, we specialize in portable power chairs designed for travel. Here are our top 5 expert tips for a smooth flight.

1. Choose the Right "Travel-Ready" Wheelchair

Not all wheelchairs can fly. The ideal travel wheelchair must be two things:

  • Foldable: It needs to collapse quickly into a compact size to fit through airport scanners or be stowed easily.

  • Lightweight: The lighter it is, the easier it is for taxi drivers, airport staff, or family members to handle. Carbon fiber or aluminum alloy frames are best.

2. The "Golden Rule": Airline Approved Batteries

This is the most critical tip. Airlines have strict regulations regarding lithium-ion batteries due to fire risks.

Generally, batteries must be under 300Wh (watt-hours) to be carried on a plane, but always check with your specific airline first. Most of Anywell Shop’s portable electric wheelchairs are designed with airline-compliant batteries, but you must verify before you book your ticket.

Important: You will likely need to remove the battery and carry it with you in the cabin as a carry-on. Do not leave lithium batteries in the wheelchair if it goes into the cargo hold!

3. "Gate Check" Your Wheelchair

Don't check your wheelchair at the main ticket counter with your suitcases if you can avoid it.

Ride your electric wheelchair all the way through security to the boarding gate. Ask the gate agent for a "Gate Check" tag. You can then ride down the jet bridge to the airplane door, transfer to your seat, and the airline staff will stow the chair in the cargo hold right there. This reduces the chance of damage significantly.

4. Protect Your Joystick

The joystick controller is the most sensitive (and expensive) part of your power chair. When you gate-check your chair, we highly recommend wrapping the joystick in bubble wrap or a small towel to protect it from bumps during handling.

5. Know Your Rights

If you are flying to or from locations like the USA or EU, disability acts protect you. Airlines are generally required to transport your mobility device free of charge—it does not count towards your baggage allowance.
